Ramsay — Located next to the Black River, the small community of Ramsay has a strong dose of charm that really came to life on July 2 when it celebrated Independence Day ahead of the actual holiday.

Despite being an overcast evening, happy enthusiasm filled the air. As a DJ kept the music rolling, kids were dancing, venders were vending, and people were hanging out on blankets thrown across the grass.

“It’s nice to come with family and friends,” said Diana Alexandroni of Ironwood while relaxing in one of many lawn chairs lining the street. “The Fourth of July is for us to remember what it’s all about.”

“I’m excited,” said Kathy Longhini, vice president of the Bessemer Township/Ramsay Fourth of July Committee. “My daughter and son-in-law from Canada are here with my two grand babies, and now this is a memory for them.”

One of the highlights of the evening was a performance by Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps, whose members shimmered in their golden shirts. Their show never fails to be a crowd-pleasing experience.

Lisa Selin, a former committee president who remains an active member, credited dozens of dedicated people — including 50/50 ticket sellers — who contribute their time and energy to making the event happen.

As one example, she said, “The Department of Public Works crew, along with the summer workers, were a huge help setting this up.”

Courtesy of arrangements by Mike Fontecchio and Brandon Snyder, fireworks were provided by Spielbauer Fireworks of Green Bay.

The “Rumble Over the River” display resulted in may “oohs” and “ahhs” after being preceded by bright yellow plumes of flame, billowing like dragon’s breath into the sky.

Brian and Evelyn Aspinwall of Ironwood won $11,775 in Ramsay’s 50/50 drawing. Lynn Ormes, the treasurer of the July 4 Committee, sold the winning ticket.

Ormes and committee president Jody Jurakovich co-chaired the event.
