GWINN, Mich. - Janice L. Maki, 66, of Gwinn and formerly of Wakefield, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
She was born March 31, 1958, in Kalamazoo, a daughter of Ray and Delores (Holvick) Nurmi. She was raised there and was a 1976 graduate of Wakefield High School. She earned an Associate Degree from Gogebic Community College in Ironwood and later a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
Janice was employed as a teacher's aide and substitute teacher for years at the Gwinn Schools.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in the choir and other church activities. She loved camping and spending time at the family cottage, at family gatherings and with her grandkids.
Janice is survived by her sons, Justin Maki of Gwinn, Lee (Christine) Maki of Gwinn and Jordan (Tori) Maki of Gwinn; grandchildren, Gavin, Charlotte and Clara; siblings, Daniel (Jeanne) Nurmi of Channing, Joyce (Mike) Olson of Southrange, Wisconsin, Judy (Mike) Caruso of Foxboro, Wisconsin, Dale (Mickey) Nurmi of Lapeer, and JoAnn Nurmi of Wakefield; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Douglas Nurmi; and infant granddaughter, Evangeline.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Jack Busche officiating. Burial will take place in the Wakefield Cemetery.
