Ontonagon — Ontonagon won its season opener in convincing fashion, defeating Carney-Nadeau 86-0 Friday night.
The Gladiators scored 52 of those points in the first quarter and it was 60-0 at the half.
“We scored on the first play to dust on just running it outside and the defense took over from there. I think we scored two or three defensive touchdowns in that first quarter,” Ontonagon coach Kadin Mustafa said. “Then the JV kids got subbed in and took control of the game after that.”
Caden Besonen ran for two touchdowns (38 and 62 yards) and he caught a 21-touchdown pass from Austin Gordon, who ran 32 yards for one of his own. Brody Bobula and Dyceson Drew both rushed for touchdowns, going 43 and 41 yards, respectively, and Jack Nelson and Thomas Logghe returned fumbles for scores.
Niko Amos accounted for three touchdowns — a 21-yard rush, a 10-yard run and a pick six. Kole Kin ran for a 30-yard score.
Mustafa considered Amos the player of the game.
“Just what I preach all the time is that when we got those younger kids in there, he really took control as a leader on top of having the rushing touchdowns and a pick six,” he said.
Rex Strong ran in three two-point conversions, Owen Pantti two and Drew and Kin one each.
Carney-Nadeau turned it over eight times. Amos intercepted them twice and Skylar Sanchez grabbed the other interception.
Ontonagon travels to Rapid River Friday night for a 7 p.m. EDT game. Rapid River won 36-14 at Engadine in its opener.
“On film, they look a lot more disciplined and a lot quicker obviously than Carney,” Mustafa said. “But I’m not going to play down to anyone. We’re just going to play our game and keep rolling.”
