Ironwood – The Doors of Life program, an informational presentation created for area high school students, will be held on Oct. 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Lindquist Center in Gogebic Community College.
This program will feature approximately 17 to 18 speakers who are employed in the Upper Peninsula, largely in outdoor-related careers.
These speakers, who will be wearing their respective job uniforms, will each be given three to five minutes to tell the audience why they chose their specific career, what they love about it and what they love about living and working in the U.P.
A variety of local organizations will be represented by the speakers, including the U.S. National Park Service, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Keweenaw Peninsula, Isle Royale National Park, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and members of local law enforcement such as the Michigan State Police.
“The event aims to inspire local high school students to consider pursuing a U.P. career,” said Jim Harter of White Pine.
“A lot of people don’t realize what we have,” he said, emphasizing the two national forests in the region: Ottawa National Forest and Hiawatha National Forest.
The event will present to students the following question: “When you graduate from high school, what are you going to do with your life?”
Harter hopes that the program causes attendees to consider that, in the U.P., “You might just find the adventure of your life.”
