Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Ontonagon — If the number of absentee ballots is an indication of the size of November’s election, Ontonagon will see increased numbers.
Bill Chabot, the county’s deputy clerk, said that the township normally sends out 500 absentee ballots, but because of this year’s requests, 700 have been mailed.
Chabot said he feels there would have been more requests, but the local ballot has only a few contested races.
“There is not a race for sheriff this year, and that is one that generally brings out the biggest vote,” he said.
Chabot added that a presidential race also can bring more in-person voting to up the total votes cast on election day.
County-wide, there is only one race for the county board. In District 5, Marlene Broemer is challenging incumbent Ron Store.
In the village of Ontonagon, Pam Coey is being challenged as village president by Norm Pestka.
The one county-wide ballot proposal is a request for .15 mills for the Ontonagon County Animal Protection OCAP.
