Local voters go red in state, national races

Gogebic County - In relation to cumulative vote totals, every major state and national race in Gogebic County leaned Republican.

In the 110th District of the Michigan House of Representatives, Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock) got 4,347 votes next to Democrat Kim Corcoran, who is Ironwood's mayor and earned 3,740 votes.

A national race with local impact was that of U.S. Congress District 1, in which incumbent Republican Jack Bergman of Watersmeet received 4,626 votes in this county, or 56.86%, next to Democrat Callie Barr, who earned 3,204 or 39.38%.

Despite a number of fringe party candidates also running for U.S. president and vice president, at press time the Associated Press has called the 2024 Presidential race in favor of Donald Trump, with a total of 277 electoral college votes.

In Gogebic County, the Republican team of Donald Trump and J.D. Vance earned 4,803 votes or 57.76%, next to the Democratic team of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, who earned 3,385 votes or 40.71%.

In the Michigan race for U.S. Senate, Republican Mike Rogers earned 4,536 or 56.20% of the vote in this county while Democrat Elissa Slotkin earned 3,250 votes or 40.27%.

Local ballots also included races for Justice of the Supreme Court of Michigan; positions with the District 4 Court of Appeals; along with regents, trustees and governors of Lower Michigan universities; and positions on the state Board of Education.

As of press time, the Republican candidates noted here also appeared to be leading statewide.
