Mercer - The Mercer K-12 School was the site of a Veterans Day ceremony celebrated in the town of Mercer.

James F. Hannemann, a retired major from the U.S. Marine Corps and commander of the Mercer Area VFW Post 9536, was the master of ceremonies. Members of the Color Guard from the same post presented flags.

Hannemann is also president of the Mercer School Board.

Steven C. Finco, retired commander from the U.S. Navy, gave the keynote address.

A highlight of the ceremony was when the audience gave Betty Snyder, age 97, and other veterans a standing ovation. Snyder also offered a tribute to veterans.

Mercer High School students Samson Morden, Keewin Wilson and Simon Thompson received awards for their "Voice of Democracy" essays.

Other students also participated in preparing thank you cards for veterans. Snyder and Annette Radloff, the new president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 424, were among those reviewing them.

Music teacher Alex Kirch also directed students from fifth through eighth grade in the singing of "American Tears."
