Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
EWEN - The 13th annual Southern Ontonagon County Thanksgiving dinner was deemed a huge success in Ewen.
"The weather held and we were able to bring the community together for indoor dining at the Centennial Hall and also offered pick-up and delivery to those home-bound," said Melanie Pelkola of Trout Creek.
She and her husband, Ken Pelkola, prepared 130 meals together with their children, grandchildren, other family members and a core group of volunteers.
The free event consisted of a full-course turkey and ham dinner, complete with all the trimmings, salads and desserts.
"It would not have been possible without the financial and in-kind support of the Ewen Civic Association and the Ottawa Lions Club, as well as the many financial donations," said Melanie Pelkola.
She added, "Thanksgiving is a special time to bring the community together and reflect on our many gifts. We are especially thankful for the area support to make this happen every year."
Pelkola specifically thanked local media who publicized the event and the dozens of volunteers.
She said they set up the venue, prepared hot dishes, baked pies and desserts, delivered meals and cleaned up afterwards.
