Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Gregory James Wallis

WAUSAU, Wis. - On Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, our father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather, Gregory James Wallis, passed away unexpectedly.

Greg was born on Sept. 7, 1947, in Hurley, to George B. Wallis and Mary Lou Lopez. He grew up in Hurley, attended South Side Elementary School and graduated in 1966 from Hurley High School.

Right after graduation, Greg enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served 16 years. During his service, he toured Vietnam three times on the USS King in the Gulf of Tonkin and then transferred to the USS Cory.

After serving his sea time, he was stationed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was a Master at Arms in Great Lakes, Illinois, for his last five years, and then was medically discharged with a rank of OS1.

After retirement, Greg attended Northland College in Ashland, graduating with an Associate Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

In 1967, he married the love of his life, Sharon A. Roberts. Together they had four children, Dawn, Greg, Diane and Scott.

Greg loved many things in his life; hunting and fishing were among his passions during his time on leave, when he would meet up in Hurley with his brother, his dad, cousins, uncles and many others.

After he moved to Wausau in 2000, he worked as a chef at multiple places and was responsible for the opening and running of many kitchens. He also enjoyed cooking for his family and friends at our get-togethers. Most recently, Greg was involved in the farmers' market in Weston and in the Edgar Steam Show with his good friend, Scott Borchardt. He also was the Grand Master of the Wet Willy Club.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his three children, Dawn (John) Munda, Greg (Abby) Wallis and Diane (Lloyd) Jacobson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his sister, Betty Ann of Hurley.

Greg was preceded in death by his son, Scott Kevin; parents, George and Mary Lou; his brother, George Jr .; and many other family members.

Per our dad's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a burial in Hurley will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local Veterans.

Ascend Funeral Home and Cremation Care in Weston is assisting Greg's family.
