Bessemer — The Board of Education for Bessemer Area Schools has approved a plan for district food service director Denise Tauer to act as a food vendor for the All Saints Catholic Academy in Ironwood.

The action at the board’s Dec. 20 meeting was contingent on All Saints Catholic Academy providing transportation for all food items and assuming the liability of transporting them from one school to the other while maintaining safe temperatures during that time.

Tauer presented the proposal to the board, explaining that Ironwood Area Schools is not interested in the role.

Thanks to a grant that All Saints Catholic Academy received, its officials have the freedom to look elsewhere for food service opportunities.

All Saints Catholic Academy has requested breakfast and lunch for its students five days a week.

According to Tauer, she does not anticipate the extra responsibility being an extra burden on her staff. “We are all here to feed kids,” she said.

Breakfasts likely would be standard bagged breakfast fare, such as baked goods, fruit, etc. Lunch meals would vary, depending on the schedule set.

In other news, the board approved a trip for Key Club members wishing to attend the March 2025 conference of the Wisconsin Key Club.

According to Key Club organizer Ashley Oliver-Igl, the cost per student to attend is $190, of which she estimates students would pay $100, with the remainder covered by donations and Key Club funds.

She explained that students simply can pay the cost or else raise the money by participating in their branch fundraisers.

Oliver-Igl said the $190 cost includes the value of the hotel room, meals and event attendance. She plans to take 10 boys and 10 girls to the event.

The Bessemer Area School Key Club has 48 members, and according to Oliver-Igl, they are all dedicated to improving their community.

The board also:

— Approved a capital asset increase at the auditor’s suggestion, raising the total to $5,000.

— Set the softball umpire pay to $100 per game.

— Approved a contract for Jennifer Londo, business manager, Human Resources director and transportation supervisor, and approved her to authorize all banking and financial accounts associated with the Bessemer Area School District.

The board meeting, which normally would have been held on the fourth Monday of the month, was rescheduled to accommodate the start of winter break.
