Bessemer School Board elects officers

Bessemer — In a Jan. 8 reorganizational meeting, members of the Bessemer Board of Education voted to maintain the same positions.

Hence, Jim Partanen will remain as president, and Brady Halverson will remain as vice president. Tara Graham and Beth Steiger also will continue as treasurer and secretary, respectively.

In other reorganizational action, the board also:

— Approved First National Bank, Gogebic Range Bank and the Michigan Liquid Asset Fund Plus as depositories for school funds.

— Designated superintendent Richard Matrella or his designee as authorized to sign checks, contracts, agreements and purchase orders.

— Authorized the superintendent or business manager as electronic transfer officers.

— Set legal council as Thrun Law Firm, P.C., a Lower Peninsula operation, and

— Authorized the superintendent or his designee to post meeting notices.

The board also set its newspapers of record as The Globe and the Wakefield News/Bessemer Pick and Axe.

The Bessemer School Board holds regular meetings on the fourth Monday of each month, except for December when the board determines the best date. Meetings are held in the media center of the A.D. Johnston High School.

In other news, the board:

—Accepted the resignation of at-risk paraprofessional Courtney Vincent, and voted to post internally for the position.

—Added an after-school care position for one hour a day, two days a week.

—Approved the hiring of Kassi Houtari to train a new business manager at the rate of $33 per hour.
