Gogebic County thanks Wakefield for fairground help

BESSEMER — Members of the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners voted last week to send a letter of appreciation to the City of Wakefield regarding its help with electrical issues at the Gogebic County Fairground in Ironwood.

Under the leadership of Wakefield city manager Robert Brown Jr. and water and electric supervisor David Semenak, the city helped to address electrical issues at the fairground in the aftermath of a 2023 fire that destroyed three buildings.

"A letter of appreciation was sent to the city of Wakefield, thanking them for their assistance with getting power to the fairgrounds," said county administrator Juliane Giackino in a Tuesday email. "It was much appreciated by the county and showed how the municipalities work nicely together."

She added regarding Wakefield officials, "They are great to work with."

In other news at the Jan. 22 meeting, board members also approved sending a letter to the Michigan Department of Transportation in favor of the city of Wakefield re-establishing a more effective traffic system — perhaps a flashing light — at the intersection of U.S. 2 and M-28.

After an extended study last year, MDOT officials determined that only stop signs were needed on all four lanes of the intersection.

Board members also:

— Approved permission for county clerk Erin Bunt to advertise the following four terms that are expiring on March 31 on the Board of Directors for the Gogebic County Community Mental Health Authority in Wakefield: Scott Erickson, Jeri Ekman, William Malloy and Susan Roberts

— Received an update on the county's 4-H program via 4-H coordinator Ashley Dennis.

The next regular board meeting will be on Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. in the Gogebic County Courthouse.
